A SOUTH Essex MP challenged the Education Secretary in the House of Commons not to press ahead with emerging plans to cancel Education and Healthcare Plans (EHCP’s) for children with Special Educational Needs (SEN).
Rayleigh and Wickford MP, Mark Francois, was responding to a Statement by the Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson MP, talking about Government plans for early years education.
In the Commons, Mr Francois challenged her to rule out cancelling these plans, which provide special provision for children with SEN.
Mr Francois asked the Education Secretary: “The Secretary of State pointedly refused to rule out scrapping EHCPs.
“If that is her intention, may I genuinely offer her some advice? Please do not do that. I have had parents in my surgery in tears of frustration, some of whom have had to spend over two years navigating a bureaucratic assault course to get an EHCP. Please – if those EHCPs are taken away, there will be an anguished and angry backlash, so whatever the Secretary of State is contemplating on SEN, I ask her please not to abolish EHCPs.”
In response, the Education Secretary failed to rule out the possibility of cancelling EHCP’s, but she did stress her intention to provide support for SEN children, in a White Paper, which the Government are now expected to publish in the autumn.
