Leigh Horticultural Society held its summer show on June 16 at Leigh Road Baptist Church, which proved to be full of colour and variety.

The weeks before had been very un-Summery and on the day, the torrential rain accompanied by strong winds at times did not make it a very Summery occasion.

Never-the-less, society members managed to put on a good show, especially the roses, which were voted the stars of the show.

Terry Birdseye won the best rose exhibit with 3 red roses and the best single rose class and was awarded the Stacey Cup.

Linda Kemp won the Channon Cup for most points in the rose classes and Lesley Salmon had the most points in all cut flower classes, winning  the Southend Times Cup.

New exhibitor, Penny Hunter was thrilled to get two firsts for her pot plants.

In spite of the weather the afternoon was a happy success.

The next show is on September 7 – all are welcome.

“Leigh Horticultural is a friendly society which enjoys gardening of all sorts. Why not come along, admire the exhibits and enjoy a cup of tea and slice of cake.” said a club spokesperson.
