“All Time Low”

A SHOCKING instance of fly tipping at Rayleigh Cemetery has been branded an “all time low” by a local councillor.
The fly-tip at the Cemetery on Hockley Road saw visitors face piled-up rubbish dumped near gravestones, and spilling onto the path.
The waste has since been removed by Rochford Council following reports from residents.
Danielle Belton, Rochford Conservative councillor for Sweyne Park and Grange ward, said: “I was notified by a resident who had gone to visit her daughter at the cemetery yesterday.
“It is a significant fly-tip and I contacted the manager at Rochford Council out-of-ours and I am really pleased to say it has been dealt with as a matter of urgency.”
Coun Belton continued: “It is bad enough for someone to fly-tip in our area, but to do it in a cemetery is just disgraceful.
“Often for people visiting a cemetery it is an emotionally charged time and to be greeted with someone’s waste that has been thoughtlessly dumped at a loved one’s resting place is beyond belief.
“It’s right next to a number of gravestones and the path, there has been absolutely zero thought about what they have done and complete contempt for residents.
“This is an all-time low.
“I hope that all fly-tippers are caught and prosecuted for this totally unacceptable behaviour, but the disrespect this person has shown needs to be brought to account.”
Coun Belton added: “As is always the case the council will check the waste for anything that can identify who produced it.”
Coun Belton urged anyone with information, or who thought it might be their rubbish which someone went to tip there, to come forward, either via the Rochford Council website or to Essex Police.
She said: “It is important to remember someone may have contracted someone in good faith who has then gone on to do this, and if that is the case, I hope they will do the right thing and come forward so the company responsible can be identified.
“This is a reminder of the importance of due diligence when hiring companies to dispose of waste to ensure they are reputable and will dispose of waste responsibly.”
