SOUTHEND West’s MP, Anna Firth, visited St Pierre School as part of the Leigh Art Trail.

Ms Firth went to the school with conservative councillor Nigel Folkard where she met with artist and teacher at St Pierre, Jadie Patricia Oberholzer, and her son student Cornelius who gave her a tour of artwork from schools in the constituency.

Whilst at the school, Ms Firth chose a piece of artwork depicting Van Gogh’s sunflowers for the “Budding Artist Award.” All the work was inspired by the prompt “my favourite.”

Ms Firth was invited to make the visit and judge the children’s work by Ms Oberholzer after she met Ms Firth at the Fishermen’s Chapel in Leigh where her own artwork was on display.

Ms Oberholzer’s work focusses on the power and beauty of nature with her most recent series exploring the impact of the ivory trade.

The exhibition at St Pierre featured work from many local schools including St Michael’s, Chalkwell Hall Junior School, West Leigh Junior School, Leigh North Street Primary, Fairways Primary School, Darlinghurst Academy and Earls Hall Primary School. There were around 1500 artworks on display in total.

Ms Firth  said: “The Leigh Art Trail is one of the top highlights in the Leigh calendar, no doubt about it.

“I was absolutely thrilled to have met Ms Oberholzer, who is herself and extraordinary artist, as well as her lovely son Cornelius and then see all the incredible work done by local primary school children in the exhibition at St Pierre.

“It was very difficult to pick out which pieces I wanted to award with special recognition.

“There was a huge amount of talent on display and, I have to say, I think the future is looking bright for the Leigh art scene.

“The Leigh Art Trail as a local initiative and St Pierre School as an outstanding local school are exactly the kinds of community pillars that I support as MP.

“Everyone involved is to be congratulated.”
