A LEIGH artists and teacher is exhibiting work in the Clifftown Telephone Box Museum this month.
‘Reach Out’ by Claire Hankey, in collaboration with London based artist, Shilpa Agashe, uses Southend’s Conservation Area’s refurbished Telephone Box Museum to create an installation based on the histories and nuances of communication.
The old telephone box, itself a reminder of the changing exigencies of the way we ‘reach out’, asks: “What happens when we reach out across these little gaps in our parallel lives and make a connection?”
Since the summer of 2023, Claire and Shilpa have been engaging in a collaborative exchange of postcards, which ‘Reach Out’ showcases in an assortment of postcards and letters.
Through their installation, on show until May 4, the artists invite viewers to reflect on their own life stories and connections, perhaps even fostering new ones by extending a handwritten note or letter.
The artists are also giving away original postcards to visitors and encouraging them to pass them on as a gesture of outreach.
To participate, visitors can visit the Clifftown Telephone Box Museum, where they can pick up a free postcard adorned with original artwork and a stamped envelope (domestic UK postage only).
Visitors are kindly requested to select only one postcard to allow for wider distribution and participation.
