Assisted Dying Bill - DAVID Burton-Sampson, MP for Southend West & Leigh, has explained why he voted in support of assisted dying, in Parliament recently.

DAVID Burton-Sampson, MP for Southend West & Leigh, has explained why he voted in support of  the Assisted Dying Bill, in Parliament recently.

A statement issued by his office said: “ David Burton-Sampson would like to thank all the people of Southend West and Leigh who have been in touch with him over the Assisted Dying Bill, which he has now voted for.

“Parliament saw an historic vote when MPs agreed to back the Bill after a long debate, with many impassioned speeches on both sides of the argument.

“The MP for Southend West and Leigh had hundreds of responses to his survey, with moving stories and heartfelt views and has responded to them all. He voted for the Bill to move forward to the next stage of scrutiny because he believes in choice.

“David Burton-Sampson said: ‘This was not an easy decision and I appreciate all of the information, personal stories, and deeply held beliefs that have been shared with me during this period.

‘My Christian faith is part of my rationale but there are also my own feelings that I could not bear to be present whilst someone I love knowingly took their own life, through my own fear of loss.’

“He added that people are split on the issue and 55% of respondents to his survey were against and 42% were in favour, of the 423 constituents who took part.

‘I do still share concerns about this Bill, over how mental capacity could be interpreted and I want to ensure there’s sufficient safeguards to prevent coercion but I do reject the suggestion that the Bill will not receive sufficient scrutiny”, he said. ‘There will be further debates in the Commons and the Lords. So, we are very much at the start of the process of moving this Bill into Law. Ultimately, I believe in choice. This is a deeply personal choice, to be made by someone with a sound mind and with considerable thought.’

“The MP is urging people to continue to engage with him as the Bill continues through Parliament.”
