AN alleged attack reported at Chalkwell station resulted in train disruption and a police presence on the evening of Thursday, January 23rd.
Platforms were closed and toilets taped off as trains were told to pass through without stopping, following reports of an alleged assault at the station.
The British Transport Police (BTP) confirmed that the disruption was the result of reports of an assault at the station, with the incident first reported at around 5pm.
Passengers travelling on c2c’s Fenchurch Street to Shoebury services were informed via announcement that their trains would not call at Chalkwell, with the station remaining closed for around four hours.
c2c later reported that the station had reopened by 8pm.
Reports on social media from passengers on affected trains claimed that the men’s toilet at Chalkwell Station had been cordoned off with a police officer remaining present.
One writer on social media commented that evening: “Station reopened – police officer said incident in male toilets, but couldn’t go into any more detail.
“Men’s toilets all blocked off and police officer standing outside.”
Detective Sergeant Edward Salusbury-Trelawny said: “Enquiries into this incident are ongoing and passengers will see an increased police presence in the area as a result.”
A police presence was reported outside the station until the morning of Friday, January 24th.
Martin Terry, Independent councillor for community safety, reportedly said: “It was disappointing to hear of an assault at Chalkwell Station and I am pleased that the police are committed to increasing patrols in the area.
“I am sure Essex Police and the British Transport Police will work collaboratively on this to reassure residents.”
A spokesperson for the BTP said: “Officers were called to Chalkwell railway station at around 5.40pm yesterday (23 January) following reports of an assault in the station.
“Enquiries are ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to contact BTP by texting 61016 or by calling 0800 40 50 40, quoting reference 535 of 23 January.”
Reports can also be submitted anonymously by contacting Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
