Backing Hackspace’s Future

A NEW chapter for Freight House is a step closer after councillors voted to appoint East Essex Hackspace CIO as the preferred operator for the historic building at Monday 7 September’s Strategy, Finance, Policy & Economic Development Committee meeting.
The committee’s decision follows the work of a cross-party Freight House Task & Finish Group, which considered proposals for the building’s future, reviewed stakeholder feedback and assessed the options available.
East Essex Hackspace’s proposal sets out a vision for Freight House as a financially sustainable community hub, bringing together community activities, creative workshops, events, enterprise opportunities and meeting spaces under one roof.
The proposal was recognised for its strong governance, operational planning, financial sustainability and commitment to delivering long-term community benefit.
Councillor Adi Malviya, Leader of Rochford District Council and Chair of the Strategy, Finance, Policy & Economic Development Committee, said: “Freight House holds a special place in the hearts of many people across our district, so I’m delighted we’ve taken this important step forward.
“There has always been strong interest in seeing this building, and other council assets, brought back into regular use, and this week’s decision moves us significantly closer to that goal. It also sets up the building to play an active role in the community long term. This will also support the Council’s need to reduce ongoing maintenance costs for the empty building, money which can now be used for improving the lives of local residents.
“East Essex Hackspace has presented an exciting vision that will create a welcoming and vibrant space for residents, community groups, local businesses and visitors alike. We look forward to working closely with them to unlock Freight House’s full potential and ensure it becomes a place the whole district can be proud of for years to come.”
Tim Neobard BEM, Trustee of East Essex Hackspace CIO, said: “We’re delighted to have reached this stage. We want to bring popular events back to the Freight House, while also opening it up as a community space that people can use throughout the week.
“Our aim is to make the building feel active again, with a mix of events, activities, groups and opportunities for people to learn, create, meet others and get involved.”
The appointment is subject to the completion of the necessary legal agreements and due diligence. The Council and East Essex Hackspace will now work together on the next stage of plans for Freight House.
