Barclays Flats Plan - LEIGH Broadway’s former Barclays bank could be converted into seven flats under new plans submitted to Southend Council.

LEIGH Broadway’s former Barclays bank could be converted into seven flats under new plans submitted to Southend Council.

Plans to transform the former bank, which closed in September 2022, into a coffee shop and patisserie with an Airbnb on the upper floor were thrown out in February this year, over concerns the development would be inappropriate in the area.

Following this refusal, Property Owner Mehmed Hassan, who also owns the Sand Bar, Baboush and Leigh Food Shack, took to Facebook in April to ask residents what they want to see the building brought to life as.

Plans now submitted to Southend Council propose to add a new third floor on top of the building as part of the flat conversion.

The application, submitted by Architect Stone Me Ltd, described the proposed development plans to “erect a part first and part second floor rear and side extensions, erect roof extension to form additional floor with change of use from bank to seven flats with associated parking, bike and bin stores.”

It also plans the “altering [of] elevations, erection of external lift and erection of raised terraces to form amenity space to ground floor flats.”
