DAVID Burton-Sampson MP, has echoed the call from the “Be Ready” public awareness campaign that we should all have enough supplies to get us through everyday emergencies.
Across the country, everyday emergencies like severe storms, flooding, and power cuts can impact a community for a lengthy period of time, and so the Government are raising awareness of the simple steps households can take to be ready for these.
Earlier this year, the Government conducted a survey that found 84% of people think it’s important for the government to provide advice about how to prepare for everyday emergencies, which has led to a collaboration with the British Red Cross and 500 key partners to devise the “Be Ready” campaign.
“This is really important,” Mr Burton-Sampson, Member of Parliament for Southend West and Leigh, said when discussing the campaign: “and it’s relatively straightforward.
“We’re all encouraged to have three days’ worth of essentials ready – that means things like bottled water, non-perishable food, charged power banks, and blankets and sleeping bags.”
“Most of us already have some of these things at home already, and of course these products can be built up gradually over time by picking up an extra can or extra bottle when you’re able. But it also helps us identify some of the other things we might forget to have on us.
“For me, I need to be doubly sure I have enough extra dog food for my dalmatian just in case, and spare batteries for my radio and torch.”
Those who are State Pension age or above, with long term medical conditions or disabilities, with children under 5, and other eligibility requirements are also encouraged to sign up to the Priority Services Register, a free, confidential service offering extra support during power, gas, or water outages.
This campaign comes on top of £1.4bn investment in flooding defences this year alone,
£2.6bn investment to improve rail tracks, and £24 billion for roads to protect against bad
weather this winter.
“Be Ready is about asking people to take simple and straightforward steps to be ready for everyday emergencies and giving the best advice with simple and achievable actions,” Mr Burton-Sampson explained. “Of course, we never want to be in a position where we need to worry about these things, but you would much rather be prepped and ready for one of these everyday emergencies than not.”
