Leigh On Sea News. Beecroft Flats – WESTCLIFF’S old Beecroft Gallery is undergoing a transformation, with new apartments expected to hit the market as early as September.

After Southend Council sold the landmark Edwardian building opposite the Cliffs Pavilion for over £1 million, plans were unveiled to convert it into nine high-quality flats.

The gallery had been left in a state of disrepair since its closure in 2013, and renovating it was deemed too expensive.

To preserve the building’s heritage, the developers decided to opt for a conversion rather than demolition, keeping the original exterior intact.

Mike Gray, the managing director at Dedman Gray, disclosed that the first finished show apartment will be ready by early September, with the entire development set to be completed by early next year.

The new developers said they were committed to retaining and incorporating the building’s characteristic features in the new apartments.

Mr Gray added: “Not only will the scheme be a quality restoration. The future occupiers will enjoy some fabulous views from most of the flats and various rooms within them.

“Parking arrangements have also been improved and each apartment will have a private parking space.

“Subject to the next few months, it is planned to have the first finished show apartment ready by late August to early September, with completion of the entire development within another four to five months.”

The Beecroft Art Gallery had been gifted to the people of Southend in 1952 by Walter Beecroft to house his art collection.

In 2014, the gallery was relocated to the former Central Library in Victoria Avenue.
