STUDENTS at a Leigh Academy are “spoilt for choice” in their educational journey, despite some evidence of boisterous behaviour, an Ofsted inspector found.
During a two-day inspection in May, Belfairs Academy received positive feedback from Ofsted, who found that pupils at the school have a wide array of opportunities to explore.
The overall evaluation for the school remained “good,” and inspectors recognised the high expectations set for pupils, as well as the school’s ambitious curriculum.
However, there were some concerns raised, indicating that the inspection grade might not be as high, if a graded inspection were conducted at the present time.
Ofsted expressed worries about certain pupils showing a lack of concentration and disengagement from learning.
Additionally, a small number of boisterous students were mentioned, creating an environment where younger children might feel insecure and worried.
Some inconsistencies were noted in managing behaviour, with not all staff applying the agreed-upon systems consistently.
Inspectors also raised concerns regarding safeguarding records for pupils, stating that some records had gaps and were not consistently maintained to ensure all necessary details, actions, and outcomes were accessible to staff.
Though these minor weaknesses had not jeopardised the safety of pupils, they increased the risk of important information or actions being overlooked, potentially impacting the quality and appropriateness of the support available to pupils and their families.
Despite these concerns, the curriculum was highly praised for its ambition and dedication to providing diverse opportunities for the students, including encouraging students to take up new interests enthusiastically, including anime, coding, eco activities, and drumming.
The report stated: “Pupils who attend Belfairs Academy benefit from a provision that goes beyond the academic.
“They are spoiled for choice in the broad range of clubs that are on offer.
“Leaders have designed a curriculum that is high in ambition for all pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities.”
