A WESTCLIFF businessman was delighted with the success of the British Bengal Curry Awards, held in Southend.
Abdul Sobur, owner of Zafran Indian takeaway opposite Chalkwell Park, hosted his annual awards celebrating culinary excellence.
The glittering event, at the Park Inn Hotel, was attended by local councillors and dignitaries, as well as many representatives from the curry business.
Mr Sobur said: “The industry is going through difficulties at the moment.
“I wanted to continue this award ceremony to highlight the quality and talent that is available for customers to enjoy.”
Mr Sobur’s own cooking business is multi award winning, and this is how he came up with the idea to develop the award.
He said: “I have the skills and experience to judge restaurants and I wanted to pass on the knowledge and promote other businesses.”
There were both local and national winners at the event.
Mohammed Manik Ullah’s Ashiana in Southend was celebrated as the “Best Indian Restaurant of the Year.” From Westcliff, Kamran Hasan Miah was named the “Best Chef of the Year 2023” whilst
Mokbul Ali’s Bengal Spice in Rayleigh was crowned the “Best Newcomer Indian Restaurant of the Year 2023.”
Mr Sobur added: “It was a very good event, and the winners were very happy with the promotion.”
