A LOCAL Bowls Club organised a charity day event at Priory Park to raise funds for Age Concern Southend, a Westcliff-based organisation located at the Haven in Hamlet Court Road.

The event was hosted by the Southend Park Circle, who traditionally hold charity days for various causes. However, this year, the Committee decided to focus their efforts on supporting a single local charity.

A total of eight Southend Park Circle Clubs participated in the Bowls event on Sunday, July 9, with 67 bowlers taking part.

After an exciting competition, the Triples tournament champions emerged as Alec Effeney from Fairwood B.C., Tony Gray from White Hall B.C., and Dennis Newbery from Southchurch Park B.C.

The charity day turned out to be a great success, raising an impressive £610 for Age Concern Southend.

Sarah Wilson, the Day Centre Supervisor, and Michael Nicholson, the Acting CEO, presented the funds in the form of a cheque to Gary Williams, a Committee Member of the Bowls Club.

This heart-warming initiative showcased the community spirit of the Bowls Club and the Southend Park Circle, coming together to support a local charity that provides vital services to the elderly in the area.

Michael Nicolas, Acting CEO for Age Concern Southend said: “We are so honoured to have been chosen by the Committee.

“The funds will enable us to purchase more equipment to enhance the classes run at ‘The Haven Community Hub’ and for craft supplies for our neurological day care centre, ‘Days at the Haven’.

“Thank you to all the players involved, albeit a couple of light showers, the weather held fair and spirits were high.”

The Southend Park Circle was formed in 1930 and, to date, the following bowls club are members: Alexandra, Belfairs, Chalkwell, Eastwood. Fairwood. Great Wakering RBL, Prittlewell, Shoebury Park, Southchurch Park and White Hall B.C.
