ANNA Firth, MP for Southend West, championed events hosted by Southend-based breast chancer charity LadyMcAdden and the Estée Lauder Breast Cancer Campaign in Westminster for Breast Cancer Awareness month.
Over 55,000 women and 380 men are diagnosed each year in the UK, with half of cases resulting from self-checking.
LadyMcAdden, the only breast cancer charity to offer one-to-one support with a nurse, seeks to raise awareness for the importance of the early detection of breast cancer through education, advice and greater general awareness. At the Estée Lauder event, ambassadors spoke to raise awareness of breast examinations for younger age groups and across ethnic groups.
Speakers included Dr Zoe Williams, who spoke to highlight the importance of self-checking your breasts regularly and the various forms of support within communities.
The events, attended by a fulsome range of MPs, saw chocolate breasts handed out and offered the opportunity to have a one-on-one check-up with a nurse.
Lady McAdden’s services can be accessed by in their centre in Leigh as well as in various centres throughout the community.
Ms Firth said: “ Breast cancer awareness is incredibly important.
“It’s vital that we break the stigma surrouding discussion of breast cancer and understand how important early detection is.
“It is fantastic that Lady McAdden, based in Southend, are the only charity in the UK to offer one-to-one support with a nurse to provide an appointment, and I was delighted to have them in Westminster today to bring their services to a national level.”
