A LEIGH brewery has worked with a local hospice charity on their latest beverage, launching a new pale ale named after Southend’s ‘Cliff Lift.’

Leigh-on-Sea Brewery, based in Progress Road, have crafted The Cliff Lift pale ale to give a boost to Havens Hospice, with all proceeds from the beer to be donated to help them care for families across south Essex.

Named after one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, the Cliff Lift, built in 1912, is

one of only a few surviving funicular railways and is now officially ‘Britain’s shortest railway.’

The naming also follows in a long line of local landmark-themed beers for the Brewery, including Pier Train and Kursaal Gold.

The brewery and Havens Hospice also have a designer in common, as Neil Fendell, who designs the brewery’s branding, also designers one of the hospice’s recent elephant herd sculptures for their summer trial.

Ian Rydings, director and founder of Leigh-on-Sea Brewery, said: “Havens approached us a few months ago as they liked the branding of our beverages and wanted something done of their own.

“Havens particularly liked (Neil’s) Rock ‘N’ Glow design, which was outside of the Job Centre, in the High Street, and that was the inspiration behind Cliff Lift’s appearance.

“They wanted cans of a west coast American pale ale, which we started brewing in May, and because there was some left over, we kept it available on draft, which has since become unavailable due to how popular it was.”

The new can design features the Cliff Lift, and is courted in the well-known shades of Haven’s blue.

Mr Rydings added: “We were very keen to work and support Havens in their fundraising efforts, and it was a complete privilege to make Cliff Lift for them.”

Sarah Schubert, e-commerce and new goods manager at Havens hospices, added: “We’re always looking for new and innovative ways to raise money, so we can be there for everyone who needs us during the most difficult times.”

The cans are being priced at £3.95 and are available to buy at the charity’s online shop and at the upcoming Love Leigh Local Winter Beer Fest on December 2.
