CAMPAIGNERS and councillors were jubilant after it was announced that two bus routes will return, including one that will link Leigh and Eastwood to Southend Airport, after years of campaigning.
The news was announced by Coun Paul Collins, following a campaign conducted by him and other residents.
Coun Collins announced that Southend Council has proposed, with government backed funding, to create the much-needed North to South Bus Service.
He said: “After pressure and campaigning many requests, on March 3rd, the Cabinet will set out to tender for a new regular bus service from the Airport and Airport Business Park to Leigh Station, through Eastwood, Belfairs and Elmsleigh Drive.”
The proposed new bus service is expected to be half hourly, Monday to Saturday, with a limited service to be supported on Sundays.
The half hourly service will loop alternately via the Launch Pad at the Airport Business Park and Holiday Inn bus stop at London Southend Airport and will support residents within St Laurence, Eastwood Park, Belfairs, Blenheim Park, Leigh and West Leigh wards.
Coun Collins added: “The procedure to go out to tender, to secure a Bus Company provider, then formally register this with the Traffic Commissioners will take over three months, so earliest start date would be July 2025.
“Fingers crossed this service will go ahead and give local residents easy access to the airport.”
