LEIGH’s Green Party Coun Stuart Allen is calling for action on Nitrous Oxide usage after 112 canisters were found on Two Tree Island.
Following the monthly Lierless Leigh lier-pick on Two Tree Island, Coun Allen was horrified by the amount of industrial sized Nitrous Oxide canisters found on the Island.
112 used canisters were found by the group of volunteers, he argues: “clearly showing the recent ‘ban’ on its use by the previous Government has failed.”
Coun Allen said: “It’s shocking to see such an increase in used canisters, before the ban
we were finding around 8 a month, now we’re seeing 14 times that.
“We’re also seeing people openly on the street taking in the gas. I’m now demanding action on this from our Neighbourhood Police team, the Council and our newly elected Labour MP to highlight the dangers of using this drug to try to prevent people from using, especially young kids.”
Along with the canisters, the volunteers collected 33 bags of rubbish and found two bags of drug paraphernalia, which was taken to Southend Police Station.
The Lierless Leigh lier-pick is held once a month, residents can follow the group on Facebook and Instagram to find out the next date.
