TWO Rayleigh councillors are helping to make a positive impact on young people’s lives.

Janine and Stacey, the cofounders of Calm Kids Workshops, started the initiative with the aim of “helping children and young people build resilience and develop the skills to be able to deal with an ever-changing world and all its challenges.”

The pair initially had the idea back in 2017, after meeting on a counselling course: “just like all great friendships, we hit it off immediately and quickly realised that we had something special,” said Janine.

“We both held the same values, beliefs and passion about mental health and well-being and throughout our training journey, we vowed that one day, when the time was right and the stars aligned, we would create something magical together and start doing the work we were born to do.”

As counsellors in a large Southend Secondary School, the pair see first-hand how young people are struggling with things like anxiety, anger and friendship issues, and to understand themselves and make sense of today’s world.

Calm Kids, which started operating in May 2023, provides resources such as workshops, mentoring, support groups and 1-2-1 counselling, to support those in the local community of Rayleigh and the surrounding areas who may be struggling with things like anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, parenting issues and much more.

Their support isn’t just for children, but is available for adults, families and parents

Janine underlined the importance of early intervention for young people’s mental health, at a time that has seen a worrying increase in cases of poor mental health and well-being

“More and more youngsters are turning to self-harm as a means of coping and so we’ve made it our mission to help teach children and young people through early intervention workshops and 1-2-1 counselling, some valuable healthy coping skills so that they can take on any challenges that come their way with confidence and resilience,

“We are more passionate than ever and have some great ideas for events and services to help as many people as we can.”

Following on from their transition to school workshops, the pair are now offering a series of Positive Mindset workshops for children aged 8-12 years over September, October and November.

These are held at the MegaCentre in Rayleigh.
