Previously, Mr Francois had put forward a similar bill in the last parliamentary session, but it ran out of time. During his General Election campaign, Mr Francois had pledged to reintroduce the Bill swiftly, if re-elected.

In his concluding remarks, Mr Francois said: “Nobody really likes roadworks – they are often a necessary inconvenience.

“The aim of this Bill is to ensure that when roadworks are truly essential, we complete them as swiftly and with as little disruption as possible. I promised my constituents during the General Election that, if they returned me to Parliament, I would bring back my Roadworks Bill – and I am keeping promise today.

“This is not a partisan issue; it’s something all Members of Parliament, and more importantly, their constituents, can support. So let’s ‘Can the Cones!’ and keep traffic moving as much as we practically can.”

Commenting further on the reintroduction of the Bill, Mr Francois said: “I’m delighted to have kept my word to my constituents by promptly reintroducing my Roadworks (Regulation) Bill to Parliament.

“I’m determined to tackle the issue of over running roadworks head-on- and I hope to be meeting with the Roads Minister to explore how we can finally ‘Can the Cones!”
