P Morrisons’ plans for car park cameras

A SUPERMARKET in Hadleigh has submitted plans to install cameras and signs in their car park.

Morrisons, in London Road, introduced a three-hour parking limit in April this year, after bosses claimed that customers were “struggling to find a parking space in recent months.”

Morrisons in Hadleigh first opened back in January 2012.

Since then, the Morrisons car park has been used by residents and staff to the High Street, owing to the limited parking available.

A new retrospective planning application has now been submitted to Castle Point Council for the installation of ANPR cameras and associated signage at the car park.

As a result, residents claim the time restriction contravened the original conditions of the planning application for the store, which were to provide a large store and a car park to serve the supermarket and town centre.

Jacqui Thornton, Conservative councillor responsible for St James’ ward, has been campaigning against the changed time limit since the spring.

She has challenged the council’s planning department as well as tabling a motion to be heard at full council, which was denied.

In addition, she has lobbied leaders of the Council to fight the three-hour limit.

Coun Thornton reportedly commented: “The car park is nearly always empty, and parking elsewhere is a nightmare. The businesses are suffering.

“It has always been a car park that shared everything. It was there to benefit the whole town centre, so this decision is having a knock-on effect.”
