Leigh On Sea News: Centenarians Tea Party – SEVEN Southend residents aged 100 and over gathered with family and carers for a special afternoon tea celebration.
Organised by Julie Cushion, of the South Essex Care and Health Association, The Centenarian Tea Party revived a tradition, started by the late MP Sir David Amess, of celebrating some of the city’s oldest residents.
The event, which was supported by South Essex Care and Health Association chair Jenny Read, was held at St. Peters Catholic Church in Eastwood Road North on Saturday, September 5.
Guests enjoyed afternoon tea served by volunteers from Southend Council’s Youth Council, whilst listening to song from the 1940s performed by local soprano Elizabeth Upsher.
Attendees included Southend councillor Cheryl Nevin, former mayor and mayoress Nigel and Marion Folkard, Age Concern representative Sam Crump and the former MP for Southend West and Leigh, Anna Firth
Ms Firth said: “It was an absolute privilege to spend time with seven truly remarkable Southend residents.
“In the room we had more than a thousand years of history represented and each centenarian had their own incredible story, memories and experiences.”
The afternoon offered a moment to sing along, share memories and celebrate the life stories and experiences of the centenarians.
The oldest guest was Doris Rose, who is currently 105 and will celebrate her 106th birthday on Armistice Day.
Another guest, Gwen, is also 105 and attended with her daughters and granddaughter.
A special hundredth birthday cake was supplied by Adalah Care Home, while residents helped create colourful flower arrangements for the occasion in a colour scheme of red, white and blue.
Julie Cushion said: “I want to say a huge happy birthday to all our centenarians.
“I enjoyed chatting and hearing all about your wonderful memories and listening to your hints and tips for how to live a life well lived.”
