OLD Leigh will be invaded by nearly 1,500 rubber ducks on Sunday July 9, when the Lions Charity Duck Race is due to place.

With the aid of members of the Leigh on Sea Lions Club and 3rd Chalkwell Bay Scouts, 1,400 rubber ducks will make their way, on the incoming tide, from Bell Wharf up Leigh Creek towards Billet Wharf, where the leading duck will win its sponsor one hundred pounds.

The second, third and fourth ducks to arrive will also reward their sponsors with a cash prize.

Utter mayhem is expected following the capture of the winning four rubber ducks, as the Lions, ably abetted by the Scouts, do their best to retrieve the remaining 1,396 ducks from the creek.

The whole exercise is just one of the many charity-based community events organised by Leigh on Sea Lions Club in Old Leigh during the year, which, together with the proceeds from sales from their Charity Shop, has enabled the Lions to make charitable donations to local good causes amounting to almost half a million pounds.a
