Charity Pétanque Tournaments

A CHALKWELL pétanque club are hosting two charity tournaments on the Chalkwell beachfront this April, with residents invited to come along and support local causes.
The Mayor of Southend will officially open the events, which take place at Chalkwell Bowls Club on Chalkwell Esplanade Saturday 11 April and Sunday 19 April, with play starting at 10.30am on both days.
On Saturday 11 April, Chalkwell Pétanque Club will compete against seven visiting teams from across Essex, while Sunday 19 April will see eight home teams battle it out for the charity title.
Pétanque is played with hollow steel balls known as boules, and a small wooden target ball or jack. Points are scored by getting your boules closer to the jack than your opponent’s.
All proceeds from the tournaments will go towards the Mayor’s chosen charities — Southend in Sight and the Mid and South Essex Hospitals Charity Dandelion Appeal — both of which provide vital support within the local community.
Spectators are encouraged to attend, enjoy the seafront setting, watch competitive sport, and take part in a raffle, with refreshments available throughout the day. Organisers say the event is a great opportunity to meet new people while supporting two worthwhile causes.
