Children's Parliament Anniversary - LEIGH’S St Pierre School has marked the third year of the Sir David Amess UK Children's Parliament with a visit to Westminster.

LEIGH’S St Pierre School has marked the third year of the Sir David Amess UK Children’s Parliament with a visit to Westminster.

Launched two weeks after Sir David’s tragic murder in October 2021, the Children’s Parliament introduces students aged 7-12 to parliamentary processes and is a lasting legacy to Sir David Amess’ commitment to young people’s participation in democratic processes.

During the event, students from the Prep School discussed proposed legislation including ‘Animal Cruel Tourism’ law and ‘Herbie’s Law’, which is about live animal experimentation.

The Child Leadership Team, including Clark Dearson, 11 (Prime Minister), Naila Seetal, 10 (Deputy Prime Minister) and Aryan Shekar, 12 (Chancellor) met with Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle at the Palace of Westminster, to express strong views against trophy hunting during their discussions.
Anna Firth, Patron of the Sir David Amess UK Children’s Parliament, cochaired the discussion.

She said: “I was delighted to be able to institute the Sir David Amess UK Children’s Parliament convening in Parliament yesterday for the start of UK Parliament week.

“As a result of a request, I made a year ago while MP for Southend West, child MPs and the Child PM, Clark Dearson, from St Pierre School in Leigh met Sir Lindsay Hoyle, The Speaker of The House of Commons, David Davis MP, and Baroness Uddin in the Speaker’s House at the House of Commons.

“Both the Child PM and the Child Deputy PM and Chancellor lobbied the Speaker on issues of animal welfare before conducting a special select committee hearing considering the need to phase out experimenting and testing on live animals and eliminate cruel animal tourism.

“The Sir David Amess UK Children’s Parliament has been running for 3 years as a legacy to Sir David Amess and I am very proud to be its Patron.”
