TWO inspirational residents have been honoured for their three decades’ work enhancing the musical life of Southend.
Rosemary Pennington and her husband Roger Humphrey have had conferred upon them the ‘Freedom of the City of Southend-on-Sea’, in recognition of their commitment to enriching the lives of the younger generation with the Southend Boys and Girls Choirs.
Rosemary Pennington, who is Southend Council Head of Arts and Cultural Wellbeing, received the award with Mr Humphrey at a council ceremony on Thursday 24 April.
A spokesperson said: “Rosemary has been instrumental in making culture and music accessible to all, ensuring that the arts continue to thrive in Southend.
“Her efforts have significantly enhanced and enriched our cultural landscape, making a lasting impact on our community.”
The pairs’ achievements span a range of impactful contributions to music and remembrance.
As leaders of the Southend Choirs for 30 years, they have created valuable opportunities for both children and adults to develop their musical skills.
Their choirs have graced prestigious stages and events around the world, including performances at the Hong Kong Cathedral, Ground Zero, the BBC Proms for the Queen’s 80th birthday, and the funeral of Sir David Amess.
In addition to her musical accomplishments, Ms Pennington has played a vital role in Holocaust Memorial Day commemorations held at Southend Council every year.
Accepting her award, Ms Pennington said: “We’ve had the pleasure of watching many singers go on to establish their own careers either academically, technically or professionally or performing in professional orchestras and choirs.
“Our work, particularly with the children’s choirs continues to be our real inspiration.”
Mr Humphrey added: “We still can’t quite believe we’ve been awarded Freedom of the City doing something that we enjoy and love so much, making music. We both feel truly honoured.”
