City D-Day Commemoration - ON Saturday June 8, Anna Firth, the Conservative Candidate for Southend West & Leigh, was honoured to attend the Southend City D-Day commemorations.

ON Saturday June 8, Anna Firth, the Conservative Candidate for Southend West & Leigh, was honoured to attend the Southend City D-Day commemorations. Later the same day she attended the St Saviour’s Community Singers’ concert, which included songs from the 1940s.

The city centre commemorations were colourful and filled with music as people dressed in period 1940s dress and military uniforms took to the floor to dance along to the traditional songs from the World War II period.

Ms Firth herself enjoyed a dance and then toured the stalls meeting representatives from the Leigh British Legion, of which she is a member, the RAF and Army cadets and the Royal Artillery Association.

Ms Firth admired the wide collection of military memorabilia, which included Land Rovers, signalling equipment, replica guns and bullet shells. In the evening, She enjoyed attending the concert at St Saviour’s Church in Westcliff, which began with a musical journey from Bach to Broadway.

After the interval the audience were encouraged to sing along in a tribute to Vera Lynn, performed by duo ‘The Two Elizabeths’, Elizabeth Dunlop and Elizabeth Upsher. Sri Lankan born professional pianist Saku Walker, accompanied the singers on the piano and Ms Firth was hugely impressed by the quality of the music and singing overall.

Ms Firth said: “I was really honoured to join everyone in the city centre to help celebrate the sacrifice and success of D-Day, 80 years ago.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the music, dancing, the stalls and meeting the volunteers. It’s extremely important for those who remember World War II and especially for the younger generation, that we continue to gather together to commemorate and celebrate the bravery, courage, sacrifice and indomitable spirit of those who went to war all those years ago to save our country.

“They fought for the freedom that we enjoy today. We will remember them.”
