TO mark the start of Southend’s first City Day, new information boards commemorating the life of Sir David Amess were unveiled at Chalkwell Lifeguards station.
The Deputy Mayor hosted the event and unveiled the display boards that had been commissioned by David Burton-Sampson, MP for Southend West & Leigh, in conjunction with the Amess family.
Lady Amess provided the pictures and liaised with the MP for Southend West and Leigh who had the initial idea, prompted by the first City Day to celebrate Southend’s new status.
The council funded the project and Deputy Mayor, Coun Nigel Folkard, officiated at the unveiling ceremony in front of invited guests, including the Council Leader, Daniel Cowan, ward councillors, friends to the Amess family, members of the lifeboat team and former MP Anna Firth, who read a statement from the family.
Mr Burton-Sampson paid tribute to Sir David Amess in his address and thanked everyone who has been involved in designing and making the new noticeboards. They will be a permanent tribute to the former MP, who served the community for 24 years and campaigned tirelessly for Southend to become city.
“I thought it would be a wonderful idea and a fitting tribute to commemorate the day with newly designed and refreshed information boards that will last for years to come”, said Mr Burton-Sampson.
“They are a welcome addition to the lifeboat station and supported by the team there, particularly Tony Martin, who have been preserving the memory of Sir David Amess at the station for some time.
“It is near to the statue of the former MP and will serve to give the context and history of his contribution to the city.
“Sir David Amess fought a long and well recognised campaign for city status and it is right he is commemorated here on City Day.”
