WORK on a £5.8m revamp of the iconic Cliffs Pavilion is now underway.
Westcliff’s famous clifftop venue is being refurbished with a two-storey extension and new main entrance, after it was awarded a cash injection from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund.
Willmott Dixon was initially given the contract, but due to potential budget overruns earlier this year, the council again tendered for a “suitably qualified contractor.”
Now, Rochford-based Auburn Group Limited have been awarded the contract for the works, which began on 12 August.
Coun Matt Dent, cabinet member for culture, tourism and business said the improvements could only make the venue better.
He said: “I think it’s going to be fantastic for the city to have an updated and top-of-the-line theatre venue at the heart of Southend. It can only be good for everyone.”
The ambitious rejuvenation plan includes expanding the current restaurant to accommodate 158 guests, up from the previous 100.
Additionally, plans entail creating a modern, “more inviting” entrance and lobby, along with a striking new outdoor plaza.
Improvements to the bar, toilets, and lifts are also part of the agenda.
Coun Dent added: “I’m hoping we can attract all sorts of acts. I’d like to see us building on our recent successes bringing acts straight from the West End to Southend.
“I think it’s fair to say we’re the envy of a lot of other cities outside of London in the sort of performances we’ve managed to bring to Southend.”
