HM Coastguard Southend launched a three-hour search after an upturned dinghy and buoyancy aid found in Leigh raised concerns that someone may be in the water.

HM Coastguard Southend were called on the afternoon of Monday June 16th to reports of an upturned dinghy found a mile from shore.

The Coastguard coordinated a search of the local area with Dover MRCC (Ops room).

One mile from Old Leigh, the dinghy was discovered without passengers.

With the help of RNLI inshore boathouse, the dinghy was brought back for further review by Coastguard Officers.

It was found to contain cargo including a kitbag containing blankets and towels, a swimming ring, but no clothes.

Canvey Coastguard station officer also then alerted teams that a buoyancy aid found on the tide line in Smallgains Creek nearby.

With concern that there ‘may be’ a possibility of someone in the water, a shoreline search was conducted from old Leigh to Chalkwell.

Canvey made enquiries and reported the dinghy was probably from Island Yacht Club along with the lifejacket.

With no vessels reported missing, all search teams were stood down after three hours.

HM Coastguard Southend shared the incident on social media.

They added: “If you recognise these items, please conduct Southend Coastguard.”
