College Students Creativity

TALENTED students from South Essex Colleges Group have brought colourful creativity to a Rochford junior school.
Learners studying the Level 3 and Level 4 Foundation Diploma in Art and Design worked in partnership with Holt Farm Infant School in Rochford to paint the school’s Early Years playground with a vibrant new mural.
The mural was developed around the Level 2 and 3 phonics topics currently being explored by junior pupils, and features illustrations, letters and words that bring their learning to life while creating an exciting and welcoming environment for children to enjoy.
The collaboration marked the second year running that the college has worked with Holt Farm to bring about a creative transformation.
Working to a live client brief, the college students were encouraged to apply their own artistic styles and creative ideas throughout the project, whilst gaining valuable industry-relevant experience in including teamwork, communication, problem-solving, colour mixing and working to scale.
Montanna, a Level 4 Foundation Diploma in Art and Design student, said: “This mural work was very challenging as I had to think about what was relevant to the children’s interests as well as what would be visually pleasing to them.
“I have never painted on such a large scale before, but I did it! I would definitely recommend it to other artists and would do it again if the opportunity arose.”
The young pupils at Holt Farm Infant School played an active role throughout the process, watching the mural take shape, asking questions and sharing their ideas with the student artists.
A spokesperson for the college said: “Projects such as this highlight the real-world opportunities available to South Essex Colleges Group students, enabling them to apply their skills in professional settings while making a positive impact within the local community.”
