A COMMENDABLE community fridge initiative has earned accolades for its pivotal role in ensuring that no family in Hadleigh goes hungry, and no food need go to waste.

The Hadleigh Community Fridge, conceived by Jacqui Thornton, the Conservative councillor for St James’ ward, is located within the town’s library on London Road.

This project enables individuals with surplus food to make donations to a dedicated team of eight volunteers, rather than discarding it.

Since its launch this summer, the fridge has garnered widespread use among dozens of residents, and has seen a collaboration with the local Morrisons store in Hadleigh, which also contributes excess food to the cause.

Ms Thornton commented: “It took nearly a year to get this initiative off the ground, securing permissions, funding for the fridge, and council accreditation.

“Since its inception, it has gained significant momentum, with generous people donating substantial quantities of food to help those in need.”

She further noted: “Moreover, many individuals are coming together at Hadleigh Library’s fridge not only to access food, but also to connect, acquire new skills, and gain an understanding of the importance of waste reduction.

“I initiated this project because it deeply saddens me to see so much food waste ending up in landfills when it could be utilized by others. I’m thrilled with the community’s response, and I hope this positive trend continues.”

The Hadleigh Community Fridge operates on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 pm to 4 pm.

With support from Essex County Council and guidance from Hubbub, an environmental charity, there are plans to acquire a freezer for frozen goods.
