SOUTHEND City Council has been provisionally allocated £3.47 million to install ground source heat pumps (GSHP) in 231 council homes as part of a major green energy initiative.
The funding, awarded through the Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund Wave 3, will help improve the energy performance of social housing, reduce carbon emissions, and tackle fuel poverty.
The council will match fund this allocation through its Housing Revenue Account, ensuring further investment in improving the energy efficiency of council homes.
GSHP systems use ambient heat from the ground to provide a low-carbon, energy-efficient way to heat homes and supply hot water. This will help tenants by lowering energy costs while supporting the city’s climate goals.
This project builds on an earlier programme which has improved 110 council homes through the installation of external wall insulation systems.
Coun Daniel Cowan, Leader of the Council, said: “We are committed to making our housing more energy efficient and helping residents with the cost of heating their homes.
“This funding, alongside our own investment, allows us to install modern, sustainable technology that will cut emissions and support tenants facing fuel poverty. The programme will be based on a solid economic foundation and will build on the success of our previous retrofit work.”
The implementation of GSHP technology is expected to deliver long-term financial benefits for residents, reducing energy bills and improving the overall sustainability of council homes. Further details on the project will be shared in the coming months.
