By Southend City Council leader Coun Tony Cox – The importance of community, especially at Christmas.
EXPRESSING gratitude to our incredible foster carers is really important and so it was great that the Mayor was able to extend his heartfelt thanks to those who open their hearts and homes to children in need, at a special event for foster carers.
They play a pivotal role in providing stability and care to vulnerable children, and our community is enriched by their dedication. Yet, the demand for foster homes continues to grow, and I urge those with the capacity to consider becoming foster carers.
Talking of homes, the council was also able to showcase another important initiative – one that has seen a local house transformed into one of the most sustainable homes in the UK.
Through innovative efficiency measures, this project exemplifies our dedication to environmental responsibility.
The house will be open for people to view in the coming months, before a family from the council’s housing waiting list moves in, and we hope that this inspires residents to make eco-conscious choices in their daily lives, contributing to a greener and healthier future for Southend. The countdown has officially begun to Christmas and while for many it will be the usual food, festivities, and gifts, for some it is going to be a different sort of Christmas this year.
As the weather gets colder, I was also pleased to see the launch of the winter shelter initiative. Alongside our dedicated local partner HARP, we have worked tirelessly to create somewhere to sleep for those rough sleeping during the colder months. This facility not only offers shelter, but also provides essential support services to help individuals rebuild their lives.
In the spirit of compassion and community, we believe that everyone deserves warmth and security, particularly during the challenging winter season. Thank you to all the staff and volunteers involved.
With the cost of living rising and the financial challenges, there are going to be more families who are reminded of the true meaning of Christmas. Because it doesn’t matter how many presents are under the tree, but who you have around you that you love and care about.
