LEIGH Town Council’s full Council March 26 meeting on had to be adjourned within minutes of starting because the Locum Town Clerk was unable to attend due to sickness. The meeting will reconvene at some later date.
Coun Bernard Arscott, Chairman of the Council, said: “Unfortunately our Clerk was taken ill and had advised that afternoon she was not available.
“We attempted to find another Clerk at short notice, but no one was available. Coun Sandra McCurdy read apologies from the Clerk and explained that she had hoped to be clerking our meeting.”
A spokesperson for the council explained: “The Town Council Terms of Reference state that there must be an officer present at the meeting, in addition to the number of councillors who make the meeting quorate.
“The Clerk is not only the person who takes the minutes, they are also the qualified person to advise the Council. There were a number of important items on the Agenda that would likely require advice and input from a qualified person.
“In light of this unfortunate situation it was decided to adjourn the meeting.”
Coun Arscott added: “We would like to offer an apology to all those who turned out on Tuesday evening, especially those who wanted to ask questions at the part of the meeting set aside for public participation.
“You will be able to ask your questions at the reconvened meeting. We did not have enough time to cancel the meeting, and it was felt appropriate to open and adjourn the meeting to next week. This was the right and proper course of action in the circumstances.”
