Council Noticeboard Covered - THE Chairman of Leigh Town Council has reported residents for using sticky tape on the council noticeboard, alleging causing criminal damage.

THE Chairman of Leigh Town Council has reported residents for using sticky tape on the council noticeboard, alleging causing criminal damage.

News of Councillor Bernard Arscott’s report to the police has made a national newspaper, after he claimed that the perspex covering of the town noticeboard had been damaged by “adhesive tape” used to affix a notice.

The notice reportedly referred to a petition put up by a local campaign Group’ – which was presented at a council meeting – calling for town councillors who were elected in uncontested seats to resign and subject themselves to a vote.

In what is now being referred to by members of the group as ‘tapegate’, one commentor said: “It wasn’t about damage, but residents taking the initiative.”

Coun Arscott reported said that residents had put the notice up “without notification” and had damaged the outer covering by using an adhesive tape.

“They acted in less than good faith and then went on to publish a copy and attached it to the outside of town council noticeboard,” he said.

“The type of adhesive tape used has damaged the perspex covering.

“A report has been made to police and they will be investigating criminal damage.

“The actual notice is now up within the council noticeboard.”

An Essex Police spokesperson said at the time: “We have received a report citing a criminal damage in Leigh-on-Sea.

“The information provided to us will be assessed. At this stage, no investigation has been launched.”

Coun Arscott has been contacted for comment.
