A RECENT update at Southend’s health and wellbeing board has revealed that Southend Hospital is Covid free, for the first time since the start of the pandemic.
Margaret Eni-Olotu gave an update to councillors in the absence of Southend’s director of public health, Krishna Ramkhelawon.
She said: “Regarding Covid, it’s a downward trend in a positive way. As of last Thursday, hospitalisation is zero.
Owen Richards, chief officer at Healthwatch Southend, said: “I was pleased to hear the update about Covid-19 admissions to Southend Hospital.
“The staff of the hospital have been amazing in looking after patients under the most unbelievable conditions – we all owe them our thanks.
“We know that Covid-19 has not gone away completely, but this hopefully makes it easier for the trust to continue to tackle the waiting lists, which have understandably increased since Covid first hit us.”
This news comes after it had also been revealed that admissions for Covid in February had been increasing, but as of February 23, the Covid-19 rate of infection in the Southend community was 46.5 per 100,000, slightly below the East of England rate of 49.6.
A health report to councillors added: “We are now learning to live with Covid whilst continuously reviewing the evolution this added and its impact on our communities.
“Collectively, we continue to play an important role in the ongoing management of local outbreaks. Other areas of concern for health protection are now our renewed focus, including any emerging new challenge posed across the country.”
