A LEIGH Parish Church is leading a fundraising scheme to create a Covid-19 memorial in the heart of the town.
St Clement’s, in Leigh Broadway, has launched an online crowd funder, on behalf of The PCC of the Ecclesiastical Parish of Leigh, to create a lasting legacy in its churchyard for those who died during the pandemic.
The scheme aims to rise £20,000 and also proposes to enhance its current war memorial in the churchyard as part of the renewed memorial space.
The current memorial takes the form of a large painted statue of the crucified Christ, with a plaque in dedication to the people of Leigh who lost their lives in conflict, and is the focus of the Parish’s Armistice Day and memorial services.
A spokesperson from the fundraising team of St Clement’s said: “Please join in to create a special memorial space for loved ones lost to Covid, linked in with the existing and enhanced war memorial in St Clement’s churchyard on the Broadway, overlooking the water.
“This will be a place for us all to remember loved ones and will be a thoughtful legacy for our town for future generations to use.
“There will be stone benches with a Covid engraving that will be linked via a footpath with the current war memorial, which will be smartened up.”
