A LOCAL author is returning to Leigh’s Create98 space with another of her successful writing workshops.

Chris Penhall, a writer of contemporary romance novels, is running a workshop called “bring a sense of place and atmosphere to your writing.”

The event runs on May 14th, between 7 and 9pm, with the aim of helping budding and more experienced writers develop their creative language.

Ms Penhall not only has six novels under her belt, but works as a journalist and a freelance radio and podcast producer for BBC Essex, appearing live on air and producing four one-hour radio documentaries.

She also produces and presents a community radio programme ‘Books and Tunes’ alongside the podcast ‘Chris and Lizzie’s Random Bookish Chats’ with fellow author, Lizzie Chantree with whom she also runs a monthly Writing Buddies Meet up.

In this new two-hour workshop, Ms Penhall will use all these experiences to help you bring the world you have in your mind to life, using simple exercises and strategies.

Ms Penhall explained: “The two-hour workshop designed to exercise your writing muscles.

“Whatever you set your story, it’s important to know where your characters are. What are they seeing, hearing and feeling and how much of that do you need to include in the manuscript?

“Is the landscape a character in itself and how much does it impact the story and the people you are writing about, or is it simply a backdrop to the action?

“Whatever the answer, having a real sense of place in your mind can help you write in 3D, giving your story that all important element that can lift it off the page into the imagination of the reader.”

The event promises to be a sociable evening, with drinks and snacks available to purchase on the night.
