AN Eastwood scout side have raised money for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) through a sponsored walk.

The 1st/2nd Eastwood Cub Scouts, encompassing the beavers and cub scouts, walked all the way from Chalkwell Beach along the seafront to the land end of Southend pier where they were greeted by RNLI staff at their headquarters.

Scout leader Luke Danbrook explained: “We often visit the RNLI, so the scouts can learn about the work they do and see their hovercraft – the only ones in the area. This time, we decided to raise money through the visit.

“It was a beautiful sunny day, and the scouts really enjoyed the walk, and absolutely loved the visit.

“They got to try on helmets and see a demonstration.

“They found this information really fascinating, especially learning that the RNLI team, like us scout leaders, are volunteers”

The group raised £500, which will be distributed between the RNLI and the scout group for buying new equipment.

Mr Danbrook explained the importance of doing charity events, exemplifying the spirit of giving back and the power of collective effort: “In previous years we have raised money for the food bank and other local causes.

“It’s really important that we involve the children in activities that have a wider understanding of the community.”

He added: “My Nan started this scout group 55 years ago, but sadly she passed away four years ago.

“It’s such an honour for me to run this group now, with my best friend James.”
