MORE than £900,000 is being earmarked to protect Rochford from flooding.
Essex County Council (ECC) have announced that they are to build dams in Hockley Woods to reduce the risk of flood water reaching residents’ homes.
The scheme to build “Leaky dams” will boost the country’s flood resilience through natural flood management projects.
These Leaky dams are be made of natural wood and laid within water channels in the woods, letting steady water flow pass through while stopping high water flow.
The project is one of 40 across the UK chosen out of 600 applications, which will benefit from a £25 million grant scheme.
In total, ECC have received £91,000 to build these dams.
Precise monitoring techniques and dam locations are being evaluated, before construction is expected to begin in Hockley Woods in 2025.
Councillor and Climate Czar Peter Schwier commented: “With one of the longest coastlines in the country, Essex is particularly vulnerable to flooding.
“As climate change continues to affect our weather, it’s important we look to mitigate his affect through innovative methods.
“Leaky dams in Hockley Woods will make the area more resilient to flooding protecting nature in the area.”
