A SCHOOL choir from Leigh made their debut performance in the Council Chamber at the Civic Centre on Monday December 11 to help raise awareness of Southend City Council’s recruitment drive for new foster carers.

Over 40 children from Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary School in Leigh entertained everyone with joyous melodies and festive carols including Carol of the Bells, The Biggest Turkey and Jingle Bells.

Councillors and foster carers joined staff from the council’s children’s services team for the festive carol concert which forms part of the council’s latest campaign to encourage anyone who has space in their heart and home to join their fostering community.

Jackie O’Kane, music lead at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary School, said: “Being part of the debut carol concert was an incredible moment for our choir. Witnessing the children share their vocal talents and spread the festive spirit was truly remarkable.

“Their dedication and enthusiasm illuminated the Council Chamber, making this event a memorable one.

“We are proud to have contributed to raising awareness for such a significant cause. Collaborating with the council’s Adoption and Fostering Service was a privilege as supporting children is always the aim of our school community.”

Coun Helen Boyd, cabinet member for children’s services, education and learning, added: “I was thrilled to be a part of the carol concert. The children’s choir were sensational and it certainly made everyone feel very festive.

“During December we are reaching out to anyone that lives in or on the outskirts of our city to ask them to help us make sure every child in Southend has the Christmas they deserve.

“Many of our foster carers tell me that it’s a privilege to share their celebrations over the festive period with the children they care for and, for some of them, it’s the first time they have felt safe enough to get involved in school and home festivities.

“I’m passionate about keeping local children close to familiar surroundings, so please do get in touch with us if you think you can help.

“I’d like to send my very best Christmas and New Year wishes to all our foster carers and thank them for the invaluable help and support they provide to the children of Southend. And finally, a huge thank you to the children and staff of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary School, who made this celebration event so special.”
