Debut Children’s Book

A LEIGH author will launch her debut children’s book this summer, featuring artwork by beloved illustrator Garry Parsons.
Helen Rose’s first picture book, The Supersonic Fart, tells the story of a children’s party with explosive results, with illustration from the artist behond The Dinosaur That Pooped series.
“I started writing in 2022, although I’d always had stories floating around in my mind,” she said. “Previously, I worked as a city lawyer, so I never really had the time to properly put pen to paper.”
Ms Rose’s has also found support through the Leigh Writers’ Group to produce her work.
Described as a “fart-tastically rhyming story”, the book aims to amuse young readers while encouraging a love of reading.
“My biggest inspiration is definitely my children,” Ms Rose said.
“Spending time with them constantly reminds me of the kinds of stories, humour and imagination that children love.
“I’m also hugely inspired by Julia Donaldson, the queen of picture books. I absolutely love her books and the way she writes in rhyme.”
Alongside writing, Ms Rose now teaches Law at Anglia Ruskin University.
“I truly believe this career change, along with the support of my colleagues and family, has given me the time and space to pursue writing,” she said.
“My biggest supporter is my husband, Rob, who reads everything I write,” she adds.
Ms Rose has a summer of events planned, including bookshop appearances, school visits and book festivals. A particular highlight will be the Canterbury Literary Festival in July.
The Supersonic Fart launches on 2 July and is available to pre-order from Read on Sea, local bookshops, and online via Amazon and Waterstones. The book is aimed at children aged three to seven.
