SPEAKING in the House of Commons during a debate on Devolution, Rayleigh and Wickford MP, Mark Francois called for a County-wide referendum across Essex, to determine whether or not there really is popular support for the process.
During the debate on proposals for Devolution and Local Government reorganisation, Mr Francois said to the Local Government Minister, Jim McMahon MP: “Despite what Senior County Councillors are telling Minister’s, there is absolutely no clamour in Essex for Devolution, in fact quite the reverse.
“Neither do the public support the Government’s proposals to cancel the local elections – that’s anti-democratic.
“But if they do press ahead with that, why don’t we take the opportunity to have a County wide referendum in Essex, to see whether the public, the Council taxpayers, really do support this, they can vote for massive change or to remain as they are. And, if there is such a referendum, and I never thought these words would pass my lips, Madam Deputy Speaker, I will gladly vote remain.”
In response, Jim McMahon MP said that Devolution should be a decision for local people, but did not rule out Mr Francois’s proposal for a referendum in Essex.
