Double Indemnity Review

DOUBLE Indemnity at the Palace Theatre, reviewed by Georgina Phillips.
Sometimes, when you walk into a theatre, the scenery straight away has an effect on you and sends you a sense of chill. This was our experience as we took our seats for Double Indemnity, showing at The Palace Theatre until Saturday, 4th April.
A classic 1930s original Hollywood thriller, this Film Noir, written by James M Cain, of The Postman Always Rings Twice fame, is set with an unnerving black and white backdrop, with atmospheric lighting to set the scene.
Starring accomplished actress Mischa Barton, making her UK stage debut playing Phyllis Nirdlinger, a seductress and femme fatale, the play unfolds with many twists and turns, all narrated by Walter Huff, the leading male character in the story, here played by well- known stage and screen actor, Ciaran Owens.
Both these characters steer you through this enthralling thriller with aplomb. Indeed, the first person narrative keeps the audience at the centre of the story throughout.
As the play slowly accelerates in tempo, it has many plot turns and mysterious sidebars, with the strong supporting cast dipping in and out from the wings and adding to the feeling of impending doom ….and a sinister outcome. The speed of events means you cannot take your eyes off the stage for a second !
With magnificent moody lighting, a monochrome backdrop and an accomplished cast guiding you through, all the ingredients are there for a thrilling night.
