NEW accessible facilities are the latest addition to the RSPB nature reserve at Wallasea Island.

Councillors and chairs of Rochford District Council (RDC) opened the new facilities, including an ecologically-friendly lavatory and two accessible viewing shelters giving on to marvellous marsh views.

The improvements were made possible thanks to the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund

Madam Chair Coun Sarah-Jane Page officially cut the ribbon at the opening, joined by the Council’s Leader, Deputy Leader, members, and the dedicated volunteers who contributed to the initiative.

A spokesperson for RDC said: “The RSPB reserve at Wallasea Island is a true jewel in our District’s crown, and now it’s even more accessible for everyone to enjoy!

“Thanks to funding from the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund, Rochford District Council is proud to have supported the installation of an eco-friendly accessible toilet and two new accessible viewing shelters with stunning nature views

“With inclusivity at the heart of this project, these new facilities will allow even more residents and visitors to experience the beauty of Wallasea Island, supporting both physical and mental wellbeing.

“Come and visit soon to enjoy these fantastic new facilities and immerse yourself in nature!”

The RSPB nature reserve at Wallasea Island is a recently-created area of saltmarsh, mudflats and lagoons, formed from three million tonnes of soil that were brought to Wallasea by ship, excavated during the construction of tunnels beneath London for the Elizabeth Line.
