Estuary Celebration Walk - AREAS of Leigh and Westcliff feature on special days of the walking festival ‘T100 Our River’

AREAS of Leigh and Westcliff feature on special days of the walking festival ‘T100 Our River’, a free cultural programme that invites people to connect with Thurrock and the wider surroundings areas in new and unexpected ways.

A two-day part of the festival in May is called ‘Jacktars and landlubbers’, and offers the chance to explore the Thames Estuary by foot and tide, as part of the T100.

The organisers explained: “From boat decks to riverbanks, Jacktars and Landlubbers will immerse you in the landscapes, industries, and communities that have thrived along the Thames.

“Explore historic routes, uncover maritime and industrial heritage, and hear the untold stories of the Jacktars (sailors) and Landlubbers (labourers) who built the estuary’s rich history.”

Both days are led by Phil Easteal and Graham Mullender, and the unique event aims to help people rediscover the Thames in a whole new way.

Day one, on Friday 23 May, explores where the sea meets the shore, and takes walkers from Shoeburyness to Westcliff, via Southend Pier, in a full afternoon that lasts until 6:30pm.

Day two, on Saturday 24 May, takes walkers through fishing villages and tidal marshes, from 9am–3pm, going from Westcliff to Benfleet via Old Leigh. The trail that winds through salt marshes and tidal creeks—landscapes rich with birdlife, mudflats, and myth.

In a stirring finale, boats from Leigh Sailing Club and cadets from the Thames Estuary Yacht Club will join the walk from the water, sailing in rhythm with the land-based journey—a symbolic uniting of river and riverbank, past and present.
