Explore Bell Ringing

A UNIQUE opportunity to discover the traditional art of bell ringing is coming to Leigh this month, with members of the public invited to step inside the ringing chamber at St Clement’s Church.
The special Heritage Open Days event will take place on Saturday, September 19, from 2.30pm to 5.30pm, and Sunday, September 20, from noon to 4pm.
Visitors will be able to watch live demonstrations and see how a large set of church bells is controlled. They will also have the chance to explore the traditional ringing chamber, view historic peal boards and learn about the history behind the church’s bells.
The event is part of a special recruitment initiative, and will offer an opportunity to meet local bell ringers and discover more about the skill, timing and rhythm involved in the practice.
Visitors will be able to step inside the ringing chamber, ask questions and find out how the historic skill is passed from generation to generation.
The event will be held at St Clement’s, Leigh.
