A statement issued by the service said: “Our Live Facial Recognition technology was deployed in the city centre on Friday and Saturday.

“Eight people were arrested over the two days as your local neighbourhood policing team officers worked alongside force colleagues using the technology.

“Yesterday we made five arrests following positive alerts. These were in connection with assault, drugs possession and shop theft offences.

“On Friday three people were arrested. Our investigations will now progress.

“In a separate incident yesterday (7 June) we arrested a man in connection with threats to cause criminal damage and possession of an offensive weapon.

“And in the early hours of this morning (8 June) two people were arrested following a pursuit. The pair were arrested on suspicion of failing to stop, dangerous driving and vehicle theft.

“The arrests followed a foot chase by officers supported by one of our police dogs. They are now in custody for questioning.”

Detective Chief Inspector Ian Hughes said: “Our dedicated officers are working 24 hours a day to keep you safe and stop those who are committing offences.

“We value our neighbourhoods and are investing in increased local visibility to target what matters to you.
