David Burton-Sampson MP has reiterated his firm support for the Falkland Islands during a meeting held at Labour Party conference last month.
Facing increased focus and coverage in recent weeks, the Falkland Islands have been a source of contention between Britain and Argentina for decades. At the end of September, Argentinian President Javier Milei told the UN General Assembly that he would “take matters into our own hands” over the Falkland Islands. The Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, had previously stated that the UK would “stand firm in the face of any threats” to the Falklands’ sovereignty.
Just days after Milei’s comments at the United Nations, MP for Southend West and Leigh Mr Burton-Sampson met with Richard Hyslop, the Representative of the Falkland Islands Government in the UK, and his Deputy Michael Betts, in Liverpool to discuss the situation and show his unequivocal support for the Falklands in the face of tense UK-Argentinian relations.
“When you think about it, it’s really quite simple,” Mr Burton-Sampson said: “Falkland Islanders have as much right to determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development as any other nation.
“In 2013, 99.8% of them voted to remain a British territory, and that should absolutely be respected – including by President Milei.”
The Representative and Deputy Representative were inundated with support from MPs, Councillors, and Party Members, which Mr Burton-Sampson believes is a testament to how strongly the whole country feels about the subject.
“It hasn’t been that long since the Falklands War, so this is something that feels really real for people. It’s not just a concept of an issue with some islands far away, these are British citizens who we are proud to support and defend.
“I completely agree with the Prime Minister and Defence Secretary’s position on this, and stand firm alongside my Falkland Islander friends.”
